Normally a standard transmission is faster because you can "launch" it at a higher rpm and shift at better points .Some cars auto trannys have got real good and it will be very close , but intregra is a good example of atleast a 1 sec 1/4 mile time difference , you do get more consistency with auto , but it isnt near as fun to drive either .

stick shifts tend to be faster than automatics in general.

Well it all depends on the skill of the drivers, gear ratio, ect. But when it comes to racing...ANYTHINGS Possible

You are comparing apples to oranges. It all depends on who drives the vehicle.

The modded LS manual. The manual has a 5 speed, while the auto not only shifts gears at 7000, or maybe 6800 or so, but has 4 speeds. If you raced those two cars, the LS Manual vs the LS Auto tranny, the manual would win because you would have the ability to go above redline. While the auto will shift at or below redline. But the automatic has a tiptronic, so you can shift gears manually, starting from 1, 2, 3, then D4.But hey, anything can happen. It depends on the driver if hes crappy or not. But if the drivers were equal in skill, the manual would win by a sec or sometihng like that.

When comparing a specific vehicle aviable in both AT & MT versions, the manual transmission will be quicker than th an the 'automatic'. That's mainly becaue there are power losses (heat dissipation) through the torque converter, a component employed on vehicles with automatic transmission. And the power losses here run approximately 13 - 16% from motor to the wheels. (Example, a stock Gen 6 ['98-'02] Accord V6 AT generates 200 max HP. However, COMPTECH's website dyno shows ~ 167 wheel HP, or approx. a 16% loss from the crankshaft to the rear wheels). In more detail, 'automatics' employ torque converters which are hydraulic 'couplers' between the crankshaft output & the automatic transmission input. Manual transmission in contrast typically employ dry clutch pressure plates...they introduce minimal slippage. Yet in the 'automatic', the torque converter is designed to slip at lower RPMs and then ultimately 'lock-up' at cruising speed. Again, there are power losses/inefficiencies inherrent in the design of automatic transmissions, & that's why the automatic transmission version of any car will be slower than the MT version.Examples of approx. 0-60 times:Gen 7 ('07) V6 Accord: AT ~ mid 6 sec. range; MT ~ 5.9 sec.Gen 3 ('06) Acura TL: AT ~ 6.4 sec.; MT ~ 5.9 sec.

A stickshift is always faster than the automatic version of the car.Stickshift cars get to 60mph about 0.2 seconds quicker than automatic cars and they have a 1-2mph higher top speed.Stickshift cars are also lighter than automatic cars and cheaper to fix. Plus they get better gas mileage.
