my car sometimes won't shift into gear. I can manually override by inserting a key or other object into the small slot next to the gear shift. My mechanic can't find the problem because it is so sporadic...any advice???

I'll bet that it has something to do with the backdrive linkage, or solenoid. There is a mechanism in the shifter that is connected to the brake pedal, that prevents shifting from park without first applying the brake. In some vehicles, this is achieved with a cable, and in others it is an electrical circuit, using a solenoid to make it work...

your brake switch probably has a loose ground. it is located above the brake pedal linkage, and or it just has to be adjusted. check fuse first under driver dash . it will also not work if you spilled any liquid down the shifter.
