On many Honda and Acura models, the "R" is a reference to a sport model. I believe it's derived from their racing program where they test ideas before implementing them in production models. The GS stands for Gran Sport and has been used on various cars, both foreign and domestic for many years, for example the Buick GS.

I am not sure that GSR is used as an acronym by Honda / Acura. The first model in 1992 meant that the car was a GS model with an 'R' or racing inspired vtec engine. It went on to follow in future models that the cars were full option cars, (i.e. ABS, sunroof, power window, power locks, cruise, alloys, etc.) with high revving vtec motors.Hope that helps solve the mystery, although I wish it had some great meaning to unveil to you. KC

There is no real meaning behind it. Thats the truthful answer. There are people ideas of what it means but there is no real answer. I think the only car that has a real meaning behind the name is the NSX. Besides that, there is no meaning behind most of the other car names, for example the RSX, TSX, TL, MDX, RDX.
