Check the oil first and make sure it is not low. If the oil is fine, you may want to take your car to a repair shop.

It goes on every 40,000 miles between Acura dealer servicings. It CAN be the oxygen sensor, but it can also be the 40,000 mile checkup reminder. To know, visit one of the big auto parts stores. They have this nifty little tool they take out to your car, fiddle with it, and reset the button. Then, if the button lights up again immediately, you need a new oxygen sensor. You cannot renew your inspection in many cities/states while the light is burning, and auto repair places don't have the tool (not mine anyways).

Odds are it is an oxygen sensor. That is one of the most common reasons that a check engine light would turn on.I know some cars will turn the "Check Engine" light on if the gas cap isn't tightened enough...I dont know if your 96 acura has that little feature but try it...it's worth a shotGo get your codes pulled to find out what the problem really is.Also, it is not on because you need your 40,000 mile check up. That's what the little "Maintenance Required" light with the green square next to it is for. When that turns yellow or red it is time for some basic maintenance and you dont need a "special little tool" to change it back. Your key for the car fits in the little slot and with a push it changes back.

You can check it by going to the passenger side where the ecu is above that there should be this wire with a blue female connector, it shouldn't be connected to anything now take a wire and loop it it so it goes in both holes. Once you have this done now turn the key to the on position look at the check engine light it should give you some blinks, long blinks =10fast blinks=1so if you get a long-long-fast-fast its a code 22 then you just look it up in a manual to find what the code refers to. Try this and pm me the code and i can look it up for you or pm me your email and i can send you a scanned page of the codes.

Thanks so much for this information. I climbed right under the passanger side dash with a little bit of solder wire I had lying around (I'm more of an electronics guy myself) and got the check engine code of 80, which I found elsewhere (otherwise I may have PM'd you). Thats really nifty.

I was guessing it was going to be the Exhaust Gas Recirculation because my sister, the previous owner, had the same nagging issue.

Now that I think of it, I noticed the FSL (?) light seemed to also want to give me a code. What do those refer to?
