First you have to be diagnosed with it, as many people with heartburn think they hve acid reflux because it is a new buzz word. Acid reflux is much more serious than heartburn and includes different symptoms. Both can be controlled by eating more bland diets (stay away from hot or spicy foods and tomato or acidic products).Acid reflux requires medication like nexium or prilosec. Heartburn can use tums, malox, over the counters like that.

I suffer from acid reflux and I have been told that there are two solutions. One is take a drug for it such as Prilosec which is now sold over the counter. The other is to change your eating habits and the times you eat. I found that once I added more fiber to my diet the reflux actually went into remission. I started eating a lot of green vegetable and fruits and I stopped eating after 9PM.There is a great web site that you can go to read more about it. http://www.medicinenet.com/gastroeso...gerd/page6.htm Hope this is helpful
