Default do i have a transmission that is going bad soon? 2003 acura 3.2 TL base?

just got the car with 133k miles. i can feel the transmission shifting a little rough when riding through town. can also feel a thump when shifting into reverse. transmission was serviced 35k miles ago. car still runs fine and the gears aren't slipping. what should I do and how much life do i have left in this trans before it absolutely fails?

Not necessarily. Have it checked out. It may just need a minor repair.

what does fluid look like?

Could be it just needs a change and new filter. Use stop slip in trans fluid also.

If the fluid has never been changed it would be a good idea to get the fluid and filter changed.

First though look at the condition of the fluid if its black, the transmission is burnt up and will need replaced, in that case drive it until it dies.

If the fluid is just brown it needs changed.

If it is the original trans, it's done. A flush would certainly clear a lot of the shiit that's floating around in the trans, but it's too late.

You got a Honda from the last of a really bad run of years of shiit auto transmissions.

Sounds like trans is going,, clunk in R is a common issue when they start to fail, they were very problematic, as Brent said if it's original (u can tell if it still has Vin on trans(standing in front of car its on lower right of trans , Honda removed it on There remans,) it's done! next it will start slipping when hot at 3/4 throttle between 3rd and 4th gear. Fyi - there is no serviceable filter to replace like other transmission so forget that , and fluid level gets checked with engine Not Running!, there's nothing to adjust either so u no. Good luck!

Those Acura tl years are just horrible on transmission. Your going to need to replace it soon if you keep driving. My friend had one of those but the type s version. He ended up replacing his transmission twice while owning the car. Its also a very expensive transmission replacement. He told me it was a bit over 3k for the repair.

What did you expect out of a 133k mile car? Pay attention to your RPMS when it shifts. If it doesn't jump around when the transmission shifts, then regular maintenance, you are fine. Also good habits contribute to a long lasting car.

That Generation TL was notorious for transmission problems.
