Default I have a 2004 Acura MDX, I drive in D3 quite often. Does that mess up your transmission if you...

...drive in D3? (D3 is overdrive I'm assuming.)

D3 means you are turning off overdrive, the 4th gear is the overdrive and you are disabling it. In normal conditions you should be in regular drive, the transmission is smart enough to know when to shift to 4th or not. If you are driving in d3 on the highway I'm guessing you're getting really poor mileage, around town it probably won't matter too much.

You should only be using d3 if you are going down a hill and trying to reduce riding the brakes, or if you're in a driving situation where the car is constantly switching from 3 to 4, which is annoying. The rest of the time use regular drive.

Acura would not give you a gear position option that would damage your transmission! your trans is a 5speed and all that will do is keep it from using the last to gears ..there is absolutely no reason for that unless your towing ,just leave in drive. (D5!), (also Acura has something called grade logic which will down shift your car going down hills automaticly so you don't have to do it manually as PMack mentioned, and it will down shift accordingly going up hills obviously ) your thinking to much into this,Acura has you covered just leave it in the normal D..(D5)
