Default What are the best and most affordable mods to gain hp in a rsx base model?

I have a 2002 RSX base model with nothing but a AEM cold air intake. And I wanted to be just a little bit faster but I also want to keep my dependability. I have heard 4-1 headers in a skunk2 intake manifold is a good choice. And of course everybody I know says put in exhaust on first. And that sounds nice but I don't want my car to be very very loud and I'm sure they make quieter good sounding exhaust but I'm not sure what brands to choose from. So I just want some advice from a really good Honda mechanic or tuner. I'm fairly mechanically inclined. But if I had to I would hire a shop to do it. I want least like 40 more horse. So what is the smartest way?

In my opinion - best bang for the buck, under $300 is the Hondata ECU reflash for the base model. It's not 40hp more but it's a nice overall gain in power.

The power you're looking for is like that of the Type-S and there are ways of getting close with the base motor. You're looking at quality bolt-ons (intake manifold, properly sized race header and exhaust), engine management (like Kpro) plus cams (at least the Type S, A2 cams). This recipe brings you to a "VTEC killer" setup which is fairly popular for EP3 civics and also possible for the RSX base. You'll need rockers and modification to run the VTEC cams properly or you can purchase of the shelf performance cams for the base. It's probably not difficult for your skills - you can find more details on that on popular forums. Google is your friend.

But bottom line is, we were able to make 190whp on the base model using A2 rocker setup (better idle quality), A2 cams, PRB intake manifold, AEM V2 intake, Megan Racing race header, Greddy SP exhaust and tuned using Hondata Kpro. So yeah, it's going to cost you a pretty penny for 40hp. Similar upgrades on the Type-S would put them well over 200whp and they still have the gearing advantage.

...Or you could always attempt to sell the car to get an actual Type S or something faster -- that'd be the "smarter" way to go about it.
