Default k20z1 VTEC not engaging?

So my friend bought a 05 RSX Type-s about 4 years ago. Never knowing what he actually had under the hood. He let me drive his car the other night, I tried to have fun and show him the potential his car actually has by engaging v-tec. Sadly no engagement and he thought I was really stupid haha my question now is why wouldn't it engage? He has the k20z1 could if be the vtec solenoid is clogged or something greater? He has never ran his car or pushed it to its limit.

Henry - Did you clean it or replace it? A friend at work did mention his being clogged up?
