Default 2002 Acura TL Type S for $5500, is the transmission doomed?

It's an automatic and I know about the transmission problems but just how common are they? Is this car doomed? It's got 127xxx miles and has had all the recommended maintenance and oil changes. Looks like a great car. Will probably check it out Thursday. If this car didn't have infamous transmission problems I'd be all over it.

Doesn't seem like anything is wrong with it, of course, I haven't driven it. I know what to watch out for while driving. Hard shifts and slipping.

DO I have to worry if I find the tranny was swapped with a new one after 2005? I heard the problem may have been fixed by then. If it still has an original tranny and has survived this long, should I still be worried? Did Acura ever find a way to prevent the originals from failing? Think it could do another 20k or is there no real way to tell?

Wouldn't mind owning it and selling it for something a little later down the road but actually.. seems a little wrong to sell it expecting it to bust on someone else.

It seems for the most part, the ones that make it past 100k don't want to die. I also see a lot of people who have had 4 transmissions! Could you imagine dealing with that without warranty now? This car is frustrating.

not worth of buying if there are problems already on the car, buy the time you buy it then send it for repairs you will be spending about another 5k

I would, commonly see them fail before fifty thousand,, sometimes thirty there first ones would be replaced,, never really fixed the replacements either although we were replacing PCMs after we put them in i guess some programming change that was supposed to help .. Just terrible.(fyi - if you drive it the first sign of trans failure was delay into reverse and a 2 ?3 slip at heavy throttle after warmed up),,,,,,,,,,, Also if the transmission has the Vin plate still on the transmission it's an original,, acura removed the plate on the reman.. If your standing in ft of the car it would be lower right of the transmission near starter,, the rivet holes will be there with no plate it its a Honda replacement,,, fyi it's the type s TL that really had the most trans problems.. Good luck

If the tranny was swapped by the Acura dealer after 3/2005 you should be alright. Otherwise, you don't really know what it has been swapped out with. These are cool cars but the trannies are a big issue. My brother had his replaced twice before 90.000 miles. He wanted to get rid of it after the second swap, but didn't think that anyone would want the car. the second one was replaced in '06. He still has the car with almost 300,000 miles on it and it hasn't given him any issues since the last swap.

Btw, thumbs up to the answer of mine.

I say have a good mechanic/technician take a good inspection. I own a '03 TL with 116,xxx miles with the stock tranny, and only got serviced after I bought it 2000 miles ago and I've never had a problem with it...
