The AC runs when the defrost is on so that it supplies dry air to the
windshield... thus facilitating the defogging of the windshield.
Personally, I like the feature. There must have been some designer who
said, "Jees, I hate having to turn on the AC everytime I turn the knob to
de-frost! Anyway to change that?"
