Your car is OBD-I. A loose gas cap will not set an error code.

I would strongly advise checking the ECU error code. That's what your
mechanic will do anyway.

With the ignition on (but the engine OFF), pull the carpet back in the
pasenger's footwell and count the blinks from the red LED. There may be
long and short blinks, then a longer pause as the sequence repeats. Report
back here.
