I had a problem like this on an old cavalier. The BRAKE light on the
dashboard (for hand brake) was coming on because the cable was sticking
after I released the hand brake. It ended up staying pulled just enough
to cause the light to come on. I got the brake cable serviced at a garage
and the problem was fixed.
