I find it hard to improve on Lue R's answer. Nonetheless, let me add a few things:* On a standard transmission, the clutch is there to keep the gears disengaged.* You will want to have the gears disengaged briefly whenever you shift; therefore, you will need to learn to co-ordinate the movements of your clutch-foot and your shifting hand.* When you stop, you will want to have the gears disengaged; therefore, press the clutch to the floor before you put on the brakes.
