vtec engines have vtec cams. a vtec cam has a larger lobe with more lift and more duration. vtec engages at a certain rpm and throttle position. when it engages it switches from the economy cam lobes to the vtec lobes for more power in the higher rpm.. usually 4.5k to 8k
