I would have it checked out by a real transmission shop first to see if you need to replace it. If so, I think the best thing to do especially for a car 10 yrs old is to replace it with a used trans. You can get a good low mileage warrantied trans for as low as $300. A good shop should charge around $400 if not cheaper. Changing it from Auto to Manual is sort of like downgrading it. It will not be worth as much if you try to sell or trade it. If you plan to keep it for a while longer obviously it wouldn't matter but it will still run hundreds of $ to make the change. Always start with the small things first before assuming the worse.
