Not in engine, but in brakes. It stands for antilock braking system. On wet or icy surfaces, sensors prevent the wheels from totally locking up when a person stomps the brakes,, pumping them far more quickly than any person can, This allows a chance of maintaining a bit of control instead of sliding straight along the line the car wants to go.
