Default Re: wat r the benefits of a loud muffler in my civic and what s the technical name for them?

There are benefits, but will not be very noticeable other than losing low-end torque. The idea here is to eliminate back pressure from the exhaust system. Back pressure is........... put it this way your engine puts out a lot of exhaust fumes right? Well not a lot because we mainly run 1.6 engines, but back pressure is how hard the engine has to work to push the burnt fumes out of the cylinder. With a stock exhaust it's pretty hard because it's a restrictive muffler. Meaning it was built to create a great amount of back pressure. The straight through mufflers that you guys call "the FART CAN" are designed to be as non-restrictive as possible. Hence the name "Straight Through". These performance exhaust systems typically come with a 2 1/4 inch piping. Imagine breathing through a coffee stirring straw thingy. You know that little red straw that's available at gas stations. Thats basically the original piping. Now take one of those straws that Mc Donalds or those fast food resteraunts offer. A lot easier to blow out of right? That's basically a comparison to an aftermarket exhaust system. This allows the engine to "breathe" better eliminating that loss of power to push the fumes out of the cylinder. Now if it's just a muffler, meaning only that big shiny thing that's welded onto your stock pipe....that's useless. If it's a header and cat-back system you'll actually see gains from that. So my advise is do not get just the muffler. Save it for the header and cat-back. Skunk2 systems are good. So are Apexi's.
