I have heard similar noises in the past.
When it comes to location, I have been confused by the "echo" effect
in small unit body and similar construction.
If you think that this might be the case try listening for the noise
while turning in foward or reverse at low speed in an empty parking
lot, (driving in circles).
I ended up identifying a failing front wheel drive steering joint in
three cases,(different cars). The noise, (and some $), disappeared on
replacement or relubricatiob with new boot covers, in all cases.
