Your not providing enough information for me to answer this question accurately. With the age of the vehicle in question it is entirely possible for murphys law to kick in. Has the transmission been frequently serviced? Why was the vehicle taken into the shop to begin with? Was any service preformed on the transmission while it was in the shop? When a transmission goes without being serviced for the life of the unit the transmission fluid itself becomes very burnt. When this happens debris and burn material are picked up the the fluid. This causes lots of wear on the internal transmission parts and can cause premature failure.
