I've got a VW Jetta and get great mileage and haven't had any mechanical problems. The only problem I've had is the paintjob. Although beware, I know there have been some Jettas that were real lemons (my brother got one that cost him over 12000$ CAD in repairs... but he would run it like a gasoline car, not a diesel one so, maybe he's to blame...).Anyway, the VW Jetta or the Honda Accord would be my choices.
