Default 94 civic transmision failure

AT failed at 60mph. It disengaged to neutral. Actually not sure about
it. It was a highway emergency
and car lost any power, engine rpm dropped to 900, high pitch/grinding
sound. After a tow back to
home I found that ATF dipstick was probably not seated firmly in its
hole when battery was serviced
a week ago. It probably caught teeth of some gear inside. Now the
dipstick is crooked and some
half of inch of it is filled out. Probably particles of this grinding
are inside and AT is at lost. There is
no MIL code saved. Lock up solenoid is OK.
It is a very good car and I am not given up. I just had the exhaust
replaced and new, good tires.
I need some advice what to do next. What damage can be found inside?
Can it be that gear steel
is harder than dipstick and not harm was done?
Thanks
Joe
