Just like you have found out, the correct lug nuts have a plastic collar
that holds the hub cap in place. Normally if this collar is missing the
hub caps will be loose, but they should not break. Perhaps your lug nuts
are to big (i.e. they are not the same ones used on cars with hubcaps
minus the plastic collar) or perhaps the holes in the hub caps are too
small?
